In our world of streaming media everything is given a fair shake as the barrier to entry has been lowered so far down it is easier to trip over the hole it has left in the ground than rebound off it entirely. An audience that has access to the internet and no longer depends on a ride to the mall in order to experience the latest “punch action” Shredder in all his plastic glory.

Harkening back to the days when movies like the Ninja Turtles would come pre-bundled with action figures waiting for eager children to drag their reluctant parents into a Toys R’ Us after they get out of the movie theater, Scarlet Nexus is a digital adaptation for a more mature audience. Typically we see shows that spawn games which are usually of varying shades of “average” but rarely do we see games that attempt the transition in reverse, much less so attacking on both fronts with a simultaneous release. Although the show didn’t manage to garner much of a positive reaction from fans of the genre, sitting at a mere 5.65 on popular anime review network “MyAnimeList” and failing to stand up to such giants as Fullmetal Alchemist or Attack on Titan, it nethertheless was a fascinating proof of concept. Produced by Sunrise and spanning 23 episodes, this was no mere gimmick tie-in.

In fact there was a serialized TV show created alongside the game, and there is even a questline that requires you to watch the show in order to proceed with said quest, although personally I was not brave enough to delve so deep. The disconnect is intentional as Scarlet Nexus more than most tries to bridge the world between game and anime. Half game and half interactive novel, you will spend as much time going on dinner dates and getting to know your fellow team mates as you will hack and slash your way through eerily deformed plant creatures endangering the lives of ordinary citizens. Scarlet Nexus is an action RPG of sorts that combines elements of character action combat with RPG mechanics.

Fast forward to todays world where a game like Scarlet Nexus is an interactive anime poised and ready to be consumed at your fingertips and it’s easy to see how many people would be almost conditioned to devour them from an early age. But all of this hardship and general disdain for anime within the mainstream public at the time meant that people who were into, were really into it. Collecting an entire set of Evangelion ran you a fortune that a highschooler simply did not have.

This was obviously an expensive undertaking as a single VHS would cost upwards of $20 and contain two entire episodes from series that if you’re lucky only had 26 episodes. Only the most mainstream of mainstream shows were beginning to make their way over to various stores, typically music based businesses like HMV that also carried an oddities section shelf in the back of the shop where nervous teens would peruse the aisle nervously picking up tapes that seemed like forbidden fruit to the adolescent eyes - the store clerks did not care but there was definitely an aura of going behind the beaded curtain in your local rental store whenever browsing this slim anime shelves.

Downloading single episodes with fan-made subtitles was an exercise that could take up entire weeks of your life as not every person had every episode available, or worse yet you might end up with a mislabeled dub which was a horror too great to describe. When I was growing up, anime was just beginning to flourish over in the States and getting your hands on the latest and greatest show usually meant having to scour the dark recesses of peer-to-peer sharing networks in a futile attempt to get your hands on 320x240 VHS rips. It’s also easy to see how this growing genre is poised to have a large, built-in fanbase considering the crossover appeal, mixed with the increasingly growing mainstream popularity of Japanese animation over in the west. The characters emote and move just like their tv show counterparts and its easy to get lost in this whimsical world of anime tropes come to life, albeit with a controller in your lap.

God Eater, Code Vein, and most recently Tales of Arise as well as Scarlet Nexus bring forth a highly stylized anime show aesthetic that combines a 3D world with immediately recognizable stylized heroines found in many popular Shounen shows of modern day. Bandai Namco is home to not only the Souls games but also an increasingly diverse roster of anime-centric action titles.
